Remembering to Play
I want to share a story with you all.
I adored singing as a child. I remember rolling around in the grass with my dog Mack, singing lullabies to him. I sang because its what we humans were designed to do. Just like how birds sing. Just like our ancestors have always sung. It hasn’t been until recent history have we created this concept of singers and nonsingers within our culture.
I was also bullied a lot in grade school. I was always bigger than everyone else and stood out so I got picked on. Why I didn’t knock those kids on their butts Ill never know or stand up for myself is a long story but let’s just say I’ve had a long journey opening and healing my throat chakra
So in 7th grade when I was given a solo in the school musical, I think I sang Rizzo’s song from Grease, probably not the most appropriate song for a 7th grader to sing but also another story.
I remember singing in front of the other kids at school and hearing them giggle and snicker. why is your voice so loud? why does it shake like that? I had a strong vibrato from an early age but I didn’t know any of that. I just knew I was weird and different and there was something wrong with my voice so I stopped singing altogether. Never told my parents or anyone. just wrote myself off as not a great singer.
it wasn’t until my senior year of college did I find the guts to take a voice class.
After singing one classical piece, the teacher came to me and asked if I had ever considered singing opera.
We are all singers. Maybe you’re just singing the wrong song.
