Make It Fun! Or What’s The Point?

Who here is a control freak? 🙋🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

I am a recovering perfectionist, anxiety ridden control freak!

Do you think that affected my singing? Hell yes it did!

I struggled for years and years to try to master my voice and no matter what I did, being able to sing freely and confidently eluded me. Why?

Well one major reason was that I was trying to force it!

Who here has ever wanted something to happen so badly you tried to force it? Again. 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️

You know that saying? You get more bees with honey. Because it’s so true. Have you ever forced someone else to do something they don’t want to do? Exhausting right? What if you made it worth their while instead? Much easier right?

Well the same logic applies to ourselves! We as human beings are driven by pleasure and fear! Our society has taught us to use discipline to fight against our natural tendency towards pleasure. Take dieting for example. Don’t eat that cake, make yourself go to the gym! This is exactly why dieting doesn’t work. Because we don’t want to do what isn’t pleasurable. So what if instead of fighting against our human nature, we use it to our advantage. As an ex serial dieter I can absolutely tell you that dieting never worked for me because I hated being told what to do even if the person telling me what to do was me. So instead, I started finding workouts ie yoga and dance that felt good. So I didn’t have to force myself to workout but I wanted to do it. Same with eating healthy foods. Instead of forcing myself to eat bland vegetables I found ways to make healthy meals that tasted delicious so that I wanted to eat them!

I finally got smart and started using the same strategy for music. I stopped forcing myself to sing what I didn’t want to sing. I started finding ways to make singing and practicing music more enjoyable. I sing songs I want to sing and that bring me joy. I do fun, free vocal warmups instead of boring, countless scales all the time.

I found ways to make it fun and enjoyable. So now I never have to force myself to practice. I wake up and I can’t wait to practice.
