“Success” Is Never Worth Our Health

Wylde Voices - Blog Post Burnt Out Woman

Nothing is worth destroying our health.

We deserve and can achieve success without harming ourselves.

Who made you believe that when you “grew up” you had to get serious?

Handle our shit? YES

But take everything seriously? HELL NO

I took music so seriously in my twenties that it almost destroyed the love & joy I felt playing music as a child.

My need and obsession for success as a musician killed all of the fun and in the process harmed my physical, emotional, and mental health.

SUCCESS IS NEVER WORTH OUR HEALTH

Let me repeat that

SUCCESS IS NOT WORTH DESTROYING YOUR HEALTH

We deserve and can achieve success without harming ourselves.

And it starts with destroying capitalism. HAHA. I jest. Sort of.

But really it does start with changing our relationships with work, success, and what it means to be successful.

Especially as artists!!! It’s absolutely insane how seriously we take creating art! We are the children who never stopped playing. We should be teaching the rest of society how to never stop playing and never stop creating.

So in 2019, I was brought so low that I was forced to make a decision or risk harming my health even further.

Either I quit music altogether

Or …

If I continue pursuing music as a career in any way it could only be done for the love and the joy of it

AND THAT IS WHAT I AM DOING

Was it easy? Hell no.

I had to undo some serious conditioning, thought patterns, and unhealthy habits

and replace them with kind, loving, healthy, and helpful thoughts and habits

And to this day I have to continue reminding myself every day, especially the hard days when old thoughts and criticisms come up

I DO NOT HAVE TO SING

I GET TO SING

I GET TO PLAY MUSIC AND SING EVERYDAY

BECAUSE IT BRINGS ME JOY

BECAUSE I LOVE IT

AND BECAUSE I GET TO INSPIRE AND ENCOURAGE OTHERS WHILST DOING SO

SO BY GOLLY DO WHAT YOU LOVE. DO IT OFTEN. AND DON’T TAKE IT SO DAMN SERIOUSLY!!!!
