Keep Your Voice Healthy This Holiday Season
The Holiday performance season is here, and with packed schedules, it’s more important than ever to take care of our voices.
Here are 8 essential tips to keep your voice healthy & strong this Holiday Season
(honestly these tips are great whether you’re performing or not!)
1️⃣ Take Vocal Rest: Rest your voice whenever you can, especially before or after performances. Not every phone call or conversation needs your voice right now.
2️⃣ Stay Physically Healthy: Your overall health impacts your vocal health. Prioritize rest, eat whole foods, stay warm, and hydrate like your voice depends on it—because it does!
3️⃣ Take Care of Your Mental Health: Stress and anxiety affect your voice more than you realize. Incorporate stress management techniques like breathwork, prayer, meditation, humming, or toning to stay grounded.
4️⃣ Vocal Self-Care: Indulge in vocal steaming, laryngeal massages, acupuncture, or a full-body massage to release tension & keep your instrument healthy so that you can ring in the New Year with a voice clear as a bell!
5️⃣ Daily Vocal Warmups: Humming, SOVT exercises, and focused breathwork—even for just 15 minutes a day—can keep your voice ready for action.
6️⃣ Don’t Skip Warm-Downs: After performances, cool down your voice with gentle exercises to prevent strain and recover faster.
7️⃣ Mind Your Speaking Voice: Avoid shouting in loud environments (hello, Lombard Effect!) and keep your speaking voice relaxed and supported. A supported voice is a happy voice!
8️⃣ Stay Proactive: A little extra care goes a long way—wear scarves, avoid excessive caffeine or alcohol, and consider adding vitamin C or elderberry to your routine to keep your immune system strong.
Take care of yourself so your voice & you can shine all season long
